In photography one is recording only the light reflecting from a surface-
this is insufficient to recall what is more profound –
the nature of the person, animal, event or thing.
It is far more difficult to evoke lost or forgotten emotions, care and empathy
than it is to recall the look of something.
The difference between conjuring the surface rather than an inner memory
is the difference between description (a showing, a lifeless document)
As for this picture, i shot it in Bosnia last week along with portraits from 5 other families. They and their children have been rejected by the schools, they have virtually no medical support and are ignored by the social services. They are left all too alone and abanded by the state. I will forever remember the light, but as well the patience, commitment and extraordinary love of mothers for their children.
